A Time to Choose.

The English Premier league served up the most powerful and pulsating day of last minute action to allow the City side of Manchester to celebrate a title victory.

The beautiful game again enthralled in its home nation as the greatest talents from around the world battled right down to the final two minutes to clinch the English Premiership, perhaps the greatest prize in club football.

Now there is only Champions league final before all attention focuses on the Euros 2012 and the progress of England team – Hodgson names his first 23 man squad on Wednesday 16th May 2012.

There might be a media kerfuffle over the presence, or absence, of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand but it really does not matter. Lescott and Jagielka kept world Champions Spain at bay and there more options in these positions for the England manager. Maybe it is time to look forward not back.

Gary Neville’s addition to the coaching staff adds nous and a passion for his country and the winning mentality that landed Manchester United all those titles. It is difficult to imagine that the squad will not feature Gerrard, and after the performance in the Nou Camp Lampard. Hart will be first choice in goal.

Whatever the choices Hodgson makes there will various degrees of teeth gnashing by the jaundiced writers of the national press. But its all irrelevant, whatever their name,
the professional footballers who have the privilege of pulling on the shirt of England will be playing for the greatest glory of all – to follow in the steps of the last eleven to win
a trophy for this country. Their names are always with us.

This is our time – Come On England.

Lets Hear it For Wayne.

Hodgson didn’t hesitate to make it clear that Rooney would be in the squad for Englands campaign at the Euros. This season Rooney has made 41 appearances and scored 33 goals in the worlds toughest league, the English Premiership, and the European club championships. He hits the ball hard and true, has genuine vision to execute killer passes and is always a threat in the air.

Now Rooney has over 400 top class professional games under his belt and at his club has begun to provide leadership and inspiration. The young man who walked haplessly into the trap laid by the Portuguese in Germany 2006, who was conspicuously lying low in South Africa in the 2010 World Cup, has had one more leson to learn. If UEFA can do anything to influence adversely Englands chances they will.

So England will have to play their first two games of the tournament, against France and Sweden without the most potent striker in Europe . A good test then for the squad and also a good test for the developing Wayne who has played all season with only 2 yellow cards.

Manchester United woud have been a lot worse off without his consistant level of performance or his goals. If Rooney is fit,and if England get themselves in a position to escape from the group, it maybe the case that England can produce a star who can power us through a tournament. Ramseys England had Charlton and Moore, in 1990 and 1996 Gascoigne stood above the world in the white shirt of England and maybe the Euros of 2012 will let Wayne play a big role on the main stage.

Of course he should be there, he’s one of ours and he is one of the very best.

Come On England

Lumbered !

England fans were denied their flash Harry Redknapp and committee bore Brooking got his man as the FA suits plumped for Roy Hodgson, one time boss of Finland, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. Roy has been plucked from the heady heights of Premiership mid table with West Bromwich Albion to manage the greatest footballing nation of all.
It was difficult to hold down the nausea as Sir Trevor and Roy conducted their public love in at the press conference and there is a dreadful fear of what could have been  with a swash buckling England led by Redknapp. Regardless, what is done is done and at the end of the day Hodgson won’t be playing when the eleven men of England take the field on 11th June against France in Donetsk .
Brooking may be looking forward to “working with Roy ” but hopefully West Hams biggest powder puff tackler of all time will be busy at a committee as Rooney and company take on the continents finest footballers. For England leadership will have to come from the pitch and perhaps that is the best thing of all.
By halfway through Italia 90 it seemed the senior players were telling Bobby Robson how to play it and once the tournament heat is on any manager is entirely peripheral.   The suits may have got their way for now but on the pitch it will be the hardened English professionals from the worlds strongest league that carry the all the dreams of England supporters in every town, city and village.
In Poland and the Ukraine there is no-one to fear.  Thankfully the press, the media, and the sheep brains of the commentariat have written off the Three Lions but the team that will take the pitch out there play every week against the best in the world.  Now the dreadful neurotic Capello is toast there is no reason why they cannot impose themselves and take apart some myths.  Any eleven will do  –  just let them have some pride.
Hodgson said “we are a major footballing nation” where the game is “an important part of our heritage and culture” and even mentioned winning. Yes Roy , that’s the game now.
Winning the Euros in 2012. Come On England .

England 1 USA 1

Funny old game – Englands electric start and Gerrards goal suddenly deflated by a goalkeeping howler from Robert Green.  Rooney was quiet and the back four looks messy without Ferdinand but with Algeria and Slovenia games to go theres time for a shake down cruise before it gets serious.

The British Prime Minister confirmed, 38 years late, that the 13 people shot dead by the Parachute Regiment in Derry, Ireland were all innocent. Years later the IRA blew up and killed 18 young men from the same regiment at a place called Warren Point.

The sun is still shining on the world and the games go on.  English flags are still flying and the summer is as unsettled as always.  Breezes and clouds and blue skies and showers.

This is England.

COME ON, ENGLAND.

Here we go. Here we go

In a free South Africa, under the Presidency of a man called “terroist” by Thatcher, the footballers from England, from London, from Merseyside, from the Midlands begin their campaign to win the World Cup.

First up a game of football against the United States of America. A game we need to win.

Soldiers and Dreams

A fit and focused Steven Gerrard  met the media.

He mentioned messages from soldiers in Afghanistan and he admitted he shared the dream.

Houses, cars and pubs are flying the England flag. Our footballers are in South Africa to win the World Cup.
