Jordan Pickford pushed one round the post, clawed another one up and over from the top corner, then punched away all the crosses while Dan Burn and John Stones reinforced the England defence in a classic backs to the wall performance.

At 3-2 up and with England down to 10 men Tuchal made the call to hold back and simply man the trenches and see the game out. A big call. The clock ticked down. It was in-play game management at the critical moment. When the whistle went – kudos to the England manger.

It was less edifying to see the post match whinge about the refereeing. This is England – Fifa, UEFA, the powers that be have been tilting the game against us forever. We are England, the home of football, everyone is jealous and we have to put up with petty connivances all the time. In victory, Tomas, you need to be magnanimous.
